A Standard Connection Sheet for Steel Projects When I had my own structural engineering firm, I engaged a "LEAN consultant" to improve my business practice. I estimated I gained 30% productivity increase in my staff. One of the outcomes was development of a set of standard drawings similar to what every structural consultant has...yet I was still able to gain further productivity increases. One of the detailers I worked on a project with suggested that this set of connection standards could be used to "set up" Tekla parametrically for all my work. That comment was confirmation that my "LEAN thinking" and approach could improve the delivery process and save an owner money.

Cover Sheets and Design Data Sheets The General info required at the start of any good calculations. This spreadsheet is a variant of the Eccentrically Loaded Bolt Group (any geometry) Coefficient C Calculator' I previously posted here on Steel Tools. The spreadsheet has the following input/features: 1.) Any number of bolts can be specified. 2.) Bolt coordinates may be specified, thus allowing formation of bolt group of any geometry or arrangement. 3.) Load eccentricity and rotation can be specified. Spreadsheet Output: The spreadsheet, as usual, calculates the C coefficient of a bolt group but this time it includes the following: 1.) Location of the INTANTANEOUS CENTER (I.C.) of rotation. 2.) Tabulated calculation of bolt stresses showing how the value of coefficient C is arrived at. 3.) With the I.C. determined, the spreadsheet also shows that the three equations of in-plane static equilibrium (ΣFx=0, ΣFy=0, ΣM=0) for bolt group have been satisfied --- thus, providing the PROOF that the value of coefficient C returned by the spreadsheet is correct.

Excel to Word Export Example This is a pdf example of exporting Excel spreadsheets to Word. Conventional practice is to page break Excel worksheets to fixed headers. All corporate headings and formats are in a prepared and approved Word template used as a scrapbook to collect and collate information from a variety of sources. The workbook is free of headers and format constraints so that modifcations and more details can be added to the worksheet.

Profile Nesting by Saccuan's Lab Nesting algorithms are used to make the most efficient use of material or space by evaluating many different possible combinations via recursion. Linear (1-dimensional): The simplest of the algorithms illustrated here. For an existing set there is only one position where a new cut can be placed – at the end of the last cut. Validation of a combination involves a simple Stock - Yield - Kerf = Scrap calculation.

Steel Construction Cost Estimate Workbook I have developed and currently use a series of Excel spreadsheets with built in formulas for estimating structural steel erection, miscellaneous-steel work activities, steel decking and siding installation, rebar placement, pre-engineered building erection/assembly and for pricing contract change orders. These spreadsheets are all in a single Excel file that also functions, after a project is contracted, as a job management system that calculates the project’s “as earned” values. I have put these Excel workbooks online and invite you to download them for a 3 week FREE trial period. Try this fully functional workbook at no cost and see for yourself how much simpler and faster estimating steel construction can be. Compared to the old pencil and paper method I can do in a couple hours what used to take all day; the more familiar you become with the Excel functions the quicker your cost estimates will be. You will enjoy the way your take-offs can be edited or tweaked or massaged again and again, as needed to generate a lump-sum-price that you are completely satisfied with. Also, see how these same take-off work-sheets can become a perfectly accurate “Earned Values Management System” by simply marking any portion of your take-off as complete or a percent complete. LRFD_Angles Covers most cases. You will note I have not made a Puxy case for the equal legs angle; I desisted when I thought that the Puxy case for unequal angles should cover the case by making the legs equal in input, assuming that the result would be consistent with what specified for the equal legs angle; It seems logical, but I haven't verified this is the case. So if you try such approach, verify by suplementary analysis everything sticks to the code.

MR5_REV_1.1 .xlsc LEED 2009 Credit MR5 Regional Materials has as its intent to increase the demand for building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the use of indigenous resources and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation. In late 2012 modifications were made to this credit to incorporate an adjusted transportation distance methodology. This spreadsheet template provides for the calculation and reporting of the MR5 credit.

Opening_Calculator There is open space in a braced frame that can be taken advantage of for window or door openings. Use the Opening Calculator to perform the geometric calculations to show that a door or window will fit between the braces. This will increase the opportunities to use braced frames in the structure while allowing for architectural freedom. Opening Calculator is compatible with AISC’s 2005 standards and specifications. You must enable macros in MS Excel for this program to work. Security has been removed, so the file is user-modifiable if you are sufficiently skilled with Excel programming & scripting. This tool was originally published as an AISC Steel Solutions Center 'SteelTool'. AISC no longer technically supports and maintains these files. Therefore, it is availale to any user 'unlocked' for those to freely update and modify on their own and post to their own profiles. This document has been prepared in accordance with information made available to the American Institute of Steel Construction at the time of its preparation. RAMEstimator -----UPDATE----- There is a new version of RAM Estimator available from Bentley, the creators of RAM. See the "related links" section below for a link to the updated version! . . . . ---remarks below pertain to the older file, downloadable from steeltools.org--- RAM Estimator was created to help use the popular software RAM Structural System, more efficiently. This tool allows the user to gain access to the information stored in the software model to quickly create a cost estimate for the design. The weight of the steel, number of studs, number of cambered beams, number of moment connections, surface area of the beams and columns, and total floor areas are some of the items read from the model and tabulated in RAM Estimator. Each of these items can then have a cost associated with it to obtain a total structure cost for the project. This program requires that the user have RAM Structural System installed, and is NOT compatible with WIndows Vista. ---end remarks---

Scientific_Calculator A subscriber of Steel Tools has asked me if it is possible to make the Scientific Calculator (that is embedded in my SteelPro and Welding Calculator applications) as standalone application. My response, of course, was affirmative. The SciCALCULATOR has all the capabilities that are available in real one. It perfoms the following mathematical operations in accordance with the following calculation priority sequence: 1.) Functions, 2.) Polar to Rectangular or Rectangular to Polar, 3.) Exponential, 4.) Multiplication, 5.) Division, 6.) Addition, and 7.) Subtraction. It also performs the following scientific functions: 1.) Trigonometric [Sine, Cosine, Tangent], 2.) Inverse-trigonometric [ArcSine, ArcCosine, ArcTangent], 3.) Hyperbolic [Hypebolic Sine, Hyperbolic Cosine, Hyperbolic Tangent], and 4.) Inverse Hyperbolic [Inverse Hypebolic Sine, Inverse Hyperbolic Cosine, Inverse Hyperbolic Tangent]. Other features are discoverable as one starts using the SciCALCULATOR...

Surface_Area Surface Area will help you quickly estimate the surface area of the steel in a regular building. Since painting costs are based on the surface area of the coated steel, as opposed to the floor area, you can get a more accurate estimate of the required paint. Surface Area can also be used to estimate the volume of spray-applied fire resistive material required for a project. Enter typical beam, girder, and column sizes and the surface area of the steel is summarized. Version 13.0 has been updated to include the shape properties from the AISC Steel Construction Manual , 13th Edition. Surface Area is compatible with AISC’s 2005 standards and specifications. You must enable macros in MS Excel for this program to work. Security has been removed, so this file is user-modifiable if you are sufficiently skilled with Excel programming & scripting.
